Property
- Graphite with acid inserted between its flake layers (visually similar to standard flake graphite).
- When heated to about 150–200°C, the acid reacts, causing the particle layers to expand.
- Coarser particles expand more significantly (fine-particle grades are less common)
- Used for fire retardant applications in the construction industry to prevent the spread of fire.
- Expanded particles can be pressed into without binders.
- After expansion, the particles have a high adsorption capacity for heavy oil.
Expandable Graphite Expansion

In this experiment, the expandable graphite rapidly expanded to about three times its original volume.
